The requirements on the materials used in new automotive drive systems are increasing, but our innovative TEGOMER® additives are providing new opportunities in lightweight construction by improving thermal conductivity and flame protection. Our highly filled plastic compounds give final components a high-quality appearance.
The high temperatures in electric drive systems, especially in electric cars mean lightweight components that are also high-temperature-resistant and flame-retardant are indispensable. This is where our non-toxic TEGOSIL® homogeneous pastes come in by improving the thermal conductivity and heat resistance of high-performance rubber materials, liquid silicone rubbers (LSR) and high consistency rubbers (HCR) to meet the stringent fire safety protection standards in the transport sector. For example, the silicone rubber gaiter of an articulated bus or railway carriage, or the silicone rubber seals used in battery electric vehicles (BEV) made using TEGOSIL® can increase the heat resistance of silicone rubber from approximately 200°C to an impressive 300°C. This enables extremely compact construction methods ensuring all the space close to the hot engine is opimized.
When it comes to improving the performance of BEVs every small improvement counts, and our TEGO® Surten E solutions are used to enhance the electrical performance and production efficiency of Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIB). By improving LIB energy storage and yields, BEVs can travel much further, and our surfactant technology platform of wetting and dispersing agents, defoamers, plasticizers and anti-cracking agents enable large gains in battery electrical performance and lower their LIB productions costs.
Our portfolio also includes specialty resins and additives for the “out-cell” battery assembly process that improve thermal management performance in battery and module packing. Our adhering, potting, cooling, housing and heat transfer solutions play a crucial role in guaranteeing battery performance under all circumstances.
Flame retardants significantly lower the risk of fire, but they also modify polymer properties which can significantly impact the effectiveness of the materials used in e-mobility and transport applications. Based on organically modified siloxanes, our innovative TEGOMER® additives ensure optimum flame retardancy without adversely affecting the material properties, for example in new silicone rubbers used in railway cars, or for e-mobility in electronics and in electrical systems where flame protection is critical for cables, switch cabinets, casting compounds and components.
Even just a minimal amount of the right TEGOMER® additive can make a key contribution to improving electrical performance and help meet further industry and legislative requirements – such as minimal smoke formation and low heat release rates in the event of a fire. Evonik’s organically modified siloxanes act as little magical add-ins to open up new possibilities in the development of flame retardant compounds.
Composite materials are often first choice when it comes to reducing weight in the automotive/e-mobility, aircraft or shipbuilding industries. Even in conventional drive vehicles, integrated lightweight construction ensures greater driving dynamics and efficiency, and metal-plastic composites enable weight savings of up to 40%. But, despite their lightness, these composites based on fiber-reinforced plastics need to be as strong, stable, and durable as metal. As the drive for more ecological energy continues, fuel additive packages must adapt to new specifications and raw material sources to extract more energy and remain effective to evolve with every new engine generation to reduce emissions. Evonik has been supplying diesel market formulators with superior solutions for more than three decades making us a unique supplier of innovative solutions. Our TEGO® Antifoams represent a range of high-performance defoamers for diesel and the more ecological B5/B10 biodiesel.
Excessive foaming, reduced filling capacity, longer filling times, and reduced productivity at the fuel pump mean defoamers remain a key component in multifunctional additive packages. The organo-modified siloxane backbone of our TEGO® Antifoam high-performance defoamers ensures low surface tension for excellent performance stability over several weeks of storage at extremely low temperatures.
For diesel fuels with high amounts of biocomponents, we have developed TEGO® Antifoam MR 507 and for gasoline applications we offer a broad range of additives from our diverse technology toolbox including lubricity enhancers, compatibilizers, dispersants, emulsifiers or corrosion Inhibitors. With our formulating experience and customers’ market knowledge we are helping to develop the next generation of more sustainable biofuels.
Efficiency meets compatibility when it comes to Evonik’s additives package for high-performance fluid formulations. We provide wetting agents and lubricity enhancers that boost lubrication performance and processing for a wide variety of transmission oil & industrial fluids, gathering decades of technical expertise.
In some applications such as high-speed grinding, some metalworking fluid emulsions barely reach the contact point between tool and workpiece leading to insufficient lubrication, excessive wear and higher processing costs. Our organomodified siloxane wetting surfactants help to avoid this problem by increasing lubrication directly at the contact point showing excellent performance in oil-based and water-based metalworking fluids and are applicable in metal cleaner formulations too.
We have also developed a broad range of additives that can be used with modern base oils in application areas such as transmission oil and industrial fluids. They provide excellent lubricity by improving properties, good solvency for lipophilic/ crystalline components and offer a very high polarity and low spreadability, while improving the long-term and low-temperature stability of neat oils and emulsifiable metal working fluids concentrates.
Our TEGO® Addibit additives provide solutions for today's road construction industry requirements such as durability, reduction of emissions and energy consumption, and thus support sustainable road construction and maintenance. Our TEGO® Addibit product family includes adhesion promoters for hot asphalt, emulsifiers specifically developed for the modification of bitumen and to produce bitumen emulsions, antistripping agents that enable a reduction of amine emissions during hot asphalt production and processing and low processing temperature stabilizers for foamed bitumen that significantly reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
