Evonik provides many different production solutions in the form of minute additives that yield large improvements in productivity and processability of lithium-ion batteries used in the electric vehicle industry.

Every small improvement counts when it comes to improving the performance and lowering the production costs of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). Our process enablers contribute to further improvements in the production process of lithium-ion batteries, as well as increasing yields for better electrical performance and lower overall costs. Each contribution helps to facilitate the transition to a more sustainable mode of transport.

Our broad surfactant technology platform enables us to offer a wide range of products to support your lithium-ion battery production, from wetting and dispersing agents, to defoamers and flexing agents. Clustered together they are marketed under our new brand name family of TEGO® Surten E.

Due to the highly dynamic nature of the industry, we continue to offer customer and process specific solutions and products. Thus, at this stage many experimental chemistries and products command the “XP” branding format before being fully commercialized.

  • Wetting Agents: Our wetting agents improve the wetting behavior of dispersions on substrates and diminish the defects caused by other additives at the same time. Yielding a superior and more uniform ceramic coating on polymer separators.
  • Dispersing Agents: Our dispersing agents are surface-active ingredients, which ease the incorporation of active material and conductive particles into a liquid. Agglomerates are broken up by shearing to create new surfaces. Electrode slurries are better dispersing to can higher loading rates with lower solvent contents which can result in a thicker electrode coating as well as higher energy density.
  • Flexing Agents: The addition of this processing additive can prevent the rigid electrode layer from cracking during the calendaring and rolling process as well as long-term during use. It also has the effect of enabling higher calendaring process pressure which can result in higher electrode energy densities. They essentially enable a mild flexing mechanism during without effecting the electrical conductivity and potential.
  • Defoaming / Antifoams: Our defoamer and antifoams avoid the foaming and air-entrapment. In some slurry configurations, foaming can occur which prevent an even and uniform coating. These process enablers are suited for both cathode and anode processing as well as for the separator coating.
