Building Protection

Specialty additives from Evonik enhance protection management systems for buildings.

Our water repellents shield against precipitation in all its forms to protect buildings. Buildings and other infrastructure are constantly exposed to weather and often extreme conditions – so providing protection from the elements is key to the construction of modern buildings. If water and dissolved pollutants such as rain and traffic pollution penetrate surfaces, they can often unleash damaging processes that could potentially have a negative impact on surface appearance, functionality, and durability of the building materials or can even corrode the static bond of the reinforcement. If left unchecked the damage can cause buildings to become unsafe and will typically require a hefty reconstruction price tag.

Our solutions prevent these processes by:

  • Significantly reducing water penetration
  • Improving resistance to frost and de-icing salt
  • Minimizing efflorescence
  • Reducing transport of harmful substances dissolved in water
  • They are characterized by the ability to create robust defenses against damage from weather and the environment.

Our protection management system features a variety of water repellents to protect against the elements, but to also guarantee longer infrastructure life cycles, and contribute to aesthetic requirements.

Protection management for admix applications

Our silicone-based water repellents for admix applications minimize the infiltration of water and dissolved pollutants, while maintaining water vapor permeability at the same time.

Important requirements for water repellents:

  • High degree of alkaline stability
  • Permeability to gas and water vapor
  • Low surface tension
  • No sticky surfaces
  • Deep penetration depth

Protection management for drymix applications

Under our SITREN® brand we offer high-performance water repellents for the manufacture of long-life systems. A heavy reduction in water absorption as well as excellent beading properties ensure the penetration of pollutants is reduced requiring less cleaning. Improved freeze/thaw resistance minimizes weather-related damage, which in turn lowers restoration costs and improves overall durability.

Application areas:

  • Floor compounds (thin and thick flooring)
  • Decorative overlays
  • Tile adhesives
  • Stucco and render
  • Skim coats
  • Grout (e.g., masonry mortar and joint filler)
  • Technical grouts
  • Repair mortar
  • Thermal insulation systems (EIFS/ETICS)
  • Waterproofing membranes
